Introduction
For this task we were asked to complete an ePoster on one of the given topics that were provided to us. We were assigned into groups and got together to discuss the topic that our ePoster would be about. We voted on the topic of agricultural waste used to make biofuels.
In our ePoster, we mainly focused on an example of biofuel known as bioethanol which is created from agricultural waste. During the production of ethanol if the yeast did not have a resistance to the furfural compound then the yeast's actions would be inhibited. To counteract this, there exist strains of yeast that are resistant to furfural that use the enzyme protein, aldehyde dehydrogenase, which catalyse the breakdown of furfural. The yeasts break the furfural compounds down into furfural alcohol, which is bioethanol, and furoic acid. Also in the poster we discussed the effect of bioethanol on climate , the change, challenges in bioethanol production, and also cost differentiation. This topic of agriculture and biofuels relates to the specific topic covered in BIOL103, lecture 4, on protein and structure of proteins. The direct relation is due to the fact that within our ePoster we demonstrated how proteins are capable of breaking down organic matter into useful resources. We also showed that the enzyme protein has specific beta and alpha secondary structures. |
